Tamils, Why did the war in Sri Lanka start, is it really over? Are there many orphans as a result of it?

I am a fan of Tamil people and culture and I would love to know. I feel I need to know I am hoping to adopt a Tamil child or two. Is adoption hard for a single USA born woman in Sri Lanka? I wanted to adopt a South Indian Southern Desi child way before I knew there was a war. I learned of the war last year from watching a music video by M.I.A. Thank you.
