Is now a good time to ask about the media's role and impact within society ....Our society in particular?

If the media would stick to simply being the carrier of news of an event, then they would be doing their jobs. I see a distinction between the media and the commentators. Media (press) have a role of relaying events. Commentators, however, are not restricted by just facts and are likely to add opinions.
